Kelly Ketchum Wins Excellence in Athletic Training Award

The FWATA Public Relations Committee is pleased to announce the 2019 Winter Quarter winner of the Excellence in Athletic Training Award. Each quarter, the Excellence in Athletic Training Award celebrates District 8 athletic trainers or athletic training student members who display an exceptional commitment to mentoring, professional development or enhancing the quality of health care.

This quarter’s winner is Kelly Ketcham, ATC. Ketcham is the head athletic trainer and Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at St Francis High School in Sacramento, CA. St. Francis is an all-girls Catholic school with just over 1,000 students, of which approximately 50% are involved in the athletics program. She has developed stretching, ACL prevention, nutrition and concussion awareness programs for the athletic programs during her tenure, and hosts information nights for parents to educate them about concussions.

Ketcham’s peer, Anna Sedory, was quoted saying, “After starting at St. Francis High School as an independent AT contractor in 2009, Kelly successfully transitioned the position to full time athletic trainer and then to the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. Not only did Kelly earn a spot in the administration, using her AT knowledge to put athlete safety at the front of the school’s mind, she is the first full-time AT ever hired by the school. Since joining the administration, her full-time position has improved from a 10-month position to a 12-month position in 2017. She is an on-the-spot advocate for herself and the profession. Kelly allows her clinical and professional excellence to speak for itself. Not all AT advocacy requires a hashtag.”

When told about her award, Ketcham stated, “I’m extremely flattered that someone took notice of what I do and nominated me for this award. Athletic Training is grueling and sometimes heartbreaking but at the same time extremely rewarding. I love my profession and my athletes. It’s one of the best jobs in the world.”

Please join us in congratulating Kelly on winning the Excellence in Athletic Training Award!
