Meet D8 – Garvin

The FWATA Public Relations Committee Social Media team is highlighting members of District 8 each month.  This month we highlight Hawaii Representative to FWATA Managing Board, Garvin Tsuji, MS, ATC

What first made you choose athletic training? What inspired you to become an athletic trainer?

Like a lot of other AT’s, I was injured as a high school athlete and had nobody to turn to for advice.  The day I got my cast off my ankle, I thought it was a good idea to go running to start my return to soccer.  I was inspired to help people and be that person, while staying involved in sports

How did you first get involved in FWATA?

I got involved in 1998 when FWATA first came to Hawaii.  It started off as meeting a couple of people that were on committees that were looking for Hawaii representation and I volunteered.  These people have turned out to be lifelong friends and I’m glad to have taken that first step.

What advice would you give to AT students?

I would tell AT students that they should not hesitate to reach out to their mentors for guidance and do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

What are you most proud of when you look back on your career? Or what is your most memorable moment in the profession?

I’m most proud of the being able to honor those worthy of district awards, by being on the Honors and Awards Committee. However I continue to enjoy the camaraderie amongst my colleagues the most as they are my closest friends.

What are you looking forward to most as our profession continues to grow and develop?

I look forward to our profession continually moving forward to receive the recognition and respect as given to those allied health care providers.

Is there anything you would like the members of district 8 to know about your committee or things happening in our district?

The Hawaii Athletic Trainers’ Association (HATA) provides many opportunities for its membership with regard to CEU’s (38 offered last year) and has 14 committees to support the mission of HATA.  Our annual symposium is happening on June 9-10 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
