More About Assembly Bill 161

On January 21, 2015, the California Athletic Trainers’ Association (CATA) with Assembly Member Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park), introduced AB161, Title Protection for Athletic Trainers. Click here for the full bill language

The bill would make it unlawful for any person to use the title Athletic Trainer unless he or she is certified by the Board of Certification, Inc., and has either graduated from a university after completing an accredited athletic training education program, or completed eligibility requirements for certification.

Today, California is the only state in the nation that does not require regulation for athletic trainers – allowing anyone, regardless of qualifications, to identify as an athletic trainer and potentially put athletes at risk.
