HATA at Hawaii Baptist Academy
The Hawaii Athletic Trainers’ Association hosted a Continuing Education Unit (CEU) event – for 3 CEUs – at Hawaii Baptist Academy on Monday, July 13, 2015. Over 65 people (various athletic trainers, physicians, school administrators, the Emergency Medical Services Deputy Director for the City & County of Honolulu, and a school nurse) were actively engaged in this event along with off-site/neighbor island participants in a web stream.
Dr. Rachel Coel of the Queen’s Medical Center for Sports Medicine presented an evidenced based approach for the management and treatment of heat illnesses. The talk included evidence for rectal temperature assessment, when to transport, and the most efficient cooling techniques. She was followed by Emergency Room physician, Dr. Elizabeth Char – the Medical Director of American Medical Response in Hawaii who continued the discussion into heat illness management/treatment.
Troy Furutani, ATC, reviewed the recommended changes for the spinal injured athlete, including helmet and pad removal prior to transport. Mr. Ian Santee, MPA, the Emergency Medical Services Deputy Director for the City & County of Honolulu assisted in the lecture and hands-on format of this session.
We are thankful to Dr. Rachel Coel, Dr. Libby Char, Mr. Troy Furutani, and Mr. Ian Santee for their expertise shared and the collaboration amongst various allied health care professionals – athletic trainers, emergency medical service personnel, emergency room personnel, and doctors.
