Niki Dehner

Robbie Bowers, head athletic trainer at Rancho Bernardo High School, and Niki Dehner, head athletic trainer at Francis W. Parker School, have been co-named “Athletic Trainer of the Year” by the San Diego High Schools Athletic Trainers’ Association.

The peer nominated award is given to athletic trainers who have demonstrated a commitment to protecting student athletes and the community, and upholding the standards of the profession.

Bowers currently serves as the CATA’s secondary school committee chair and is a preceptor for the San Diego State’s ATEP.  Under Dehner’s leadership, the school was awarded the first and only Safe Sports School Award in San Diego from the NATA.

The Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media passed Assembly Bill (AB) 2007 (McCarty, D-Sacramento) on Tuesday, May 3, on a vote of 5 to 0. The Concussion Management Youth Sports Act would help protect youth sports participants from injury by requiring the same protocol to be observed as those in place for high school athletes. Dr. Benet Omalu, who testified in support of the bill, expressed his concerns regarding the lack of information given to athletes.  Dr. Omalu continued, “knowledge is power,” and with this legislation coaches, parents and athletes will receive information to recognize and treat a concussion.  The CATA is a proud sponsor of this bill.

On May 22 the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation held a free screening at University City High School in San Diego, California, where they screened their 20,000th teen since the start. 578 youth were screened and found 3 at risk for sudden cardiac arrest and 4 with cardiac abnormalities. Along with the screening, the teens are also taught compressions-only CPR and how to use an AED.  There are many San Diego High School AT’s who are involved and volunteer their time.  Christina Scherr, ATC for Torrey Pines High School and CATA Region 6 Director, and Samantha Villa, ATC for St. Augustine High School, volunteered at this event.
