Concussion with California Legislature and Dr. Omalu
Assemblymember Ian C. Calderon (D-Whittier), Chair of the Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media Committee, hosted a screening of the film “Concussion”, March 1 in Sacramento at the historic Guild Theater, to raise awareness about the rise of traumatic brain injuries and discuss best practices for concussion prevention for athletes. State Senators, Assemblymembers and their staff, as well as members of the community were invited to the screening, which was well attended. The California Athletic Trainers Association was invited to participate in the event because they have been leaders on the concussion issue and introduced one of the first concussion management bills in the country. Prior to the screening of the film, Michael Chisar, the chair of the CATA governmental affairs committee represented the association and spoke on the evolution of concussion management and discussed the role and expertise of the athletic trainer in concussion management. After viewing “Concussion”, Dr. Bennett Omalu took the stage and spoke candidly about CTE, his journey in discovering CTE and of the particular vulnerability and risks of repeated blows to the head in children.
