FWATA Update: Health and Safety Concerns

The 2016 FWATA Annual Meeting WILL be held as scheduled. The health and safety of all of our attendees is an issue that our Convention Committee and Managing Board take very seriously. Please take the time and read the information below to educate yourself about some of the Island’s current health concerns that you may have heard about. The Hawaii Department of Health continues to report that the Big Island remains a safe destination for visitors and residents.

Vog is a term that refers to volcanic smog.  It is the haze you may see in the air that is caused by a combination of weather, wind conditions and volcanic activity. Vog becomes thicker or lighter depending upon the amount of emissions from Kilauea volcano, the direction and amount of wind, and other weather conditions.

People with pre-existing respiratory conditions may be more prone to adverse effects of vog which may include: headaches, breathing difficulties, increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments, watery eyes, and sore throat.  The long-term health effects of vog are unknown.

Dengue Fever:

Dengue fever is a virus that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, and although not endemic to Hawaii, is intermittently imported to Hawaii by infected travelers.

Symptoms of dengue fever include “sudden onset of fever; severe headaches; eye, joint, and muscle pain; and rash,” according to The Hawaii Department of Health. The symptoms typically resolve within one to two weeks.

Hawaii officials say they’ve reached a milestone in controlling the state’s dengue fever outbreak now that 30 days have passed since the last known infected person was contagious.

April 26, 2016*:
Since the last update, HDOH has identified 0 new cases of dengue fever. Currently, as many as 0 of the confirmed cases to date are potentially infectious to mosquitoes. All others are no longer infectious.

As your District 8 representative and board member to the NATAPAC, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Political Action Committee, I would like to bring you some exciting news for the upcoming FWATA Annual & Clinical Symposium in Kona, Hawaii on July 12 – 16, 2016.

We know how much athletic trainers love their “beverages of choice”.  So, I, along with Amy Callender, NATAPAC Treasurer, will be hosting a special “NATAPAC Beer Mug” at this year’s FWATA Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Kona Country Club on July 14th  This special “PAC Mug” will entitle the golfer an unlimited supply of beer before, during and after the golf tournament for a donation of only $20.  (or until the kegs run dry!)

Your voluntary contribution will go to supporting the interests of the athletic training profession and will represent a District 8 contribution to NATAPAC.  The financial status of the PAC is approaching a quarter of a million dollars and you and D8’s contribution can help make this milestone a reality.

The goal for D8 with this special “NATAPAC Beer Mug” is to donate at least $2,000 to NATA’s political efforts – with the hope of reaching $3,000.  Join us in this special effort and have a beer (or two or three) on the NATAPAC.  See you on the course later this summer!

Ky E. Kugler, D8 NATAPAC Board of Director
