Maritza Castro name 2015 Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year
Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) announced that Padres Minor League athletic trainer Maritza Castro of the Dominican Summer League (DSL) has been named the 2015 Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year for the DSL.
Castro has worked as an athletic trainer with the Dominican Summer League Padres for the last few seasons. Having won this award has made Castro eligible to be awarded the prestigious Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year Award, which will be voted upon by the full membership of PBATS.
“The number of athletic trainers working for the different teams in the Dominican Summer League has been increasing year by year. Every MLB team has an academy with a minor league team within the DSL in Dominican Republic. MLB wants baseball players to compete and train in a safe environment and wants to make sure injuries are handle and treated properly. So the best way to do that is to hire athletic trainers. My colleagues here in the Dominican Republic have been great support in the last two years. We are a fun and hard-working group. The things we have learned and the issues we have faced can’t be compared to the issues a normal AT would face in the US. No doubt this experience has been definitely challenging but rewarding.” writes Maritza Castro
