UCSB recipients of the Swim With Mike scholarship: (L-R) Aaron Loy and Ryan Porteous

On April 19, 2015 UC Santa Barbara hosted its “First Annual Gauchos Swim With Mike”, which was a satellite event for the Swim with Mike scholarship fund. The event was organized by UCSB staff athletic trainer, Kelly Walsh.

After two current UCSB students received 2014-15 scholarships through Swim With Mike, which helps physically challenged athletes get a college education, Walsh (who had been involved with the charity for over 20 years) decided to bring a satellite event to the UCSB campus. Events included 5-person team relays, a swim-a-thon, a belly flop contest, face painting, photo ops with the school mascot Olé, and merchandise sales. In its inaugural year, the event raised approximately $4,500 that will go towards future scholarships. Walsh and her UCSB volunteers hope to build off the success of this year and continue to raise money for the scholarship fund in the future.
