2015 Athletes Saving Athletes 2nd Annual Walk/Jog Fundraiser

asaJoin the 2nd annual walk/jog event to support athletic trainers and the Athletes Saving Athletes (ASA) program. This year help us Relay the Message around our concussion education campaign, #ASASpeakUp!

The Organization: Advocates for Injured Athletes (A4IA), is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It was founded in 2010 after high school lacrosse player, Tommy Mallon, suffered a life-threatening catastrophic injury during a game. Tommy fractured his neck, dissecting a vertebral artery and sustained his third serious sports-related concussion. He is alive for two reasons; the actions of his teammates and he had access to a certified athletic trainer who evaluated him on the spot and saved his life. Tommy’s story is the inspiration for the mission of the foundation: To promote sports safety and to provide essential support, education, and resources to help keep student athletes safe. A4IA co-founders, Beth and Tommy Mallon, realized athletes could play a huge role in helping keep each other safe by learning how to recognize signs and symptoms of life threatening injuries and conditions. The team at A4IA went on to develop a unique sports safety program.

The Program: A4IA launched its signature program, “Athletes Saving Athletes” (ASA), in January 2012. Medical experts from across the United States helped to develop educational content focused on six core areas: concussion, head and neck injuries, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness, diabetes, and asthma. All athletes learn CPR and how to use an AED. A4IA’s team of Certified Athletic Trainers deliver the curriculum to student athlete leaders. To date over 4000 local San Diego student athletes have completed the program and TWO lives have been SAVED by athletes who participated in the program.

The Message this year: Learn how to recognize concussion signs and symptoms. If you are suffering symptoms then SPEAK UP tell your athletic trainer! Be honest, this is your brain, your life and your future! #ASASpeakUp

Please come join the fun and help support the good cause!  The walk/jog will be in conjunction with a concussion awareness booth, a heat illness information booth and there will be EMS on hand to teach CPR!
