Girls on the Run Event at UNLV
In May, the Nevada Athletic Trainers’ Association (NEVATA) volunteered at a Girls on the Run Event at UNLV. Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization created to “inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind.” 3rd-8th grade girls participate in a 10-week program that helps girls to “develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.” The program culminates in a service project to positively impact their community and showcase their physical accomplishments in a celebratory 5k.
NEVATA members participated in the 5k event in two ways. They volunteered at the middle of the race aid/water station and were positioned to be a liaison for the paramedics at the finish line. Additionally, they had a pre/post-race table at which they interacted with participants and family, and shared the importance of athletic trainers and how ATs can protect young athletes.
